Defense counsel Barry Pollack, the former president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, said that Maduro’s status as head of a sovereign state, as well as the legality of the U.S. military operation in which he was taken, would be raised in forthcoming court papers. Maduro insisted to the court that he remains president of the Republic of Venezuela.
