In a gripping legal battle unfolding in Palm Beach County, Florida, an individual has filed a lawsuit against a major equipment rental company and an unidentified individual following a catastrophic accident. Alan Smith initiated the complaint on April 2, 2025, against Sunbelt Rentals, Inc., and John Doe in the Circuit Court of the 15th Judicial Circuit.

The case revolves around a severe incident that occurred on December 5, 2023. According to the complaint, Sunbelt Rentals supplied an elongated platform swing stage and supporting cables for use at a construction project at the AT&T building in Palm Beach County. Alan Smith was using this equipment when it malfunctioned; a cable snapped, causing him to fall approximately 40 feet. The plaintiff sustained serious injuries as a result of this fall. Smith’s complaint accuses Sunbelt Rentals of negligence for failing to warn users about potential risks associated with their equipment and not providing adequate training or safety measures. The lawsuit states that “Defendant SUNBELT owed a duty to its customers…to exercise reasonable care in renting its equipment,” which they allegedly failed to do.

Smith further claims that Sunbelt Rentals did not maintain their equipment properly. He argues that they neglected their responsibility to inspect and repair the swing stage and cables before leasing them out. This negligence allegedly resulted in his injuries, which include “bodily injury and resulting pain and suffering, disability, physical handicap…and loss of earnings.” These injuries are described as permanent and continuing.
