A nursing home in Palm Beach County is facing serious allegations after a lawsuit was filed against it, accusing the facility of neglect and inadequate care leading to significant harm to one of its residents. On April 3, 2025, Sandra Maia filed a complaint in the Circuit Court of the 15th Judicial Circuit in Palm Beach County, Florida, against FI-Palm Beach, LLC, doing business as The Rehabilitation Center of the Palm Beaches.

The lawsuit stems from claims that Maria Maia, an elderly resident suffering from age-related infirmities, experienced neglect during her stay at the facility. According to the complaint filed by Sandra Maia on behalf of Maria Maia, the nursing home failed to provide adequate care and supervision necessary for preventing health deterioration. The plaintiff alleges that due to this negligence, Maria suffered from worsening wounds which could have been avoided with proper medical attention and care plans. “The staff and employees failed to develop an adequate care plan and properly monitor and supervise the care and treatment provided,” states the complaint.

The plaintiff accuses FI-Palm Beach, LLC of violating Florida Statute §400.022 which outlines nursing home residents’ rights including adequate healthcare services and protection from abuse. Specific failures cited include not providing a proper turning program for wound prevention, failing to maintain cleanliness leading to skin breakdowns due to feces and urine contact, inadequate monitoring of health changes, and failure to notify family or physicians about significant health status changes. Furthermore, it is alleged that there was insufficient staffing and improper training among staff members contributing to these issues.
