Plaintiff Alleges Major Retail Corporation Created Hostile Work Environment Due to Disability
Shanteria Bennett has taken legal action against a major retail corporation, alleging workplace discrimination and retaliation based on her disability. The complaint was filed by Bennett in the Circuit Court of the 15th Judicial Circuit in Palm Beach County, Florida, on April 3, 2025, targeting Wal-Mart Associates Inc. as the defendant.
Bennett’s lawsuit claims that she experienced discriminatory treatment and a hostile work environment during her tenure as a sales associate from January 26, 2022, to December 2, 2023. According to the complaint, Bennett faced adverse actions after requesting medical leave for an appendectomy in November 2022. Despite initially being cleared to return to work after three weeks, her recovery extended beyond expectations. During this period, Bennett alleges that an acting store manager accused her of fabricating her medical condition. Furthermore, she recounts an incident where store security unjustly accused her of shoplifting while shopping at the store.
The complaint outlines multiple violations under the Florida Civil Rights Act (FCRA), including hostile work environment and retaliation due to Bennett’s disability. She argues that these actions were not only unlawful but also caused significant emotional distress and financial losses. “Any reason proffered by Defendant for the adverse employment actions is mere pretext for unlawful discrimination,” states Bennett’s filing.
