Florida had the highest number of lightning loss claims in the U.S. last year, according to new data.

The Insurance Information Institute (III) found that more than $950 million in U.S. homeowners insurance claims caused by lightning were paid out in 2022 to 62,000-plus policyholders. 

“While Florida has the highest claim count, the average claim cost is much lower than other states,” said Scott Holeman, a spokesperson with the III.
