FORT MYERS – A Cape Coral man has filed a lawsuit against a debt collection company claiming the company’s practice of sending unsolicited prerecorded voicemails violates the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.

Jim Hanson filed the potential class action in federal court against TrueAccord Corp. alleging violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991 (TCPA).

According to court documents, Hanson says TrueAccord sent him unsolicited calls to his cell phone number, which left a prerecorded voicemail on at least four separate occasions. These prerecorded voicemails sounded robotic, resembling a text-to-speech system. Hanson says the calls were attempts to collect a debt from someone other than himself, apparently the previous owner of the phone number.
