Jurisdictional changes to civil courts take effect in 2023
Florida lawyers would be wise to remember that the final round of jurisdictional changes to circuit civil and county civil courts, a process that began in 2019, will take effect in the new year.
Beginning January 1, 2023, county civil courts will hear cases in which the dispute amounts range from $8,000 to $50,000 and circuit courts will hear cases with dispute amounts greater than $50,000.
The changes were proposed by the Appellate Court Rules Committee, Civil Procedure Rules Committee, and Small Claims Rules Committee in response to a Supreme Court directive. It was prompted by changes to Ch. 2019-58, Laws of Florida, that the Legislature approved in 2019.
