A proposed Bar rule amendment allowing entities besides The Florida Bar Foundation to distribute IOTA funds would result in less effective legal services for low-income residents, according to former Foundation presidents.

Twenty-seven former presidents, ranging from Pat Emmanuel (also a former Bar president) who served from 1972-73 to 2018-19 President Juliette Lippman, signed the July 14 letter to the Task Force on the Distribution of IOTA Funds.

At the same time, Gulfcoast Legal Services Executive Director Tammy Greer wrote a letter largely supporting the task force’s proposals. Both letters were submitted just before the task force’s July 15 meeting, where it considered recommended changes from various organizations — including the Foundation — to its rule proposal.
