A Senate panel passed a bipartisan measure that would reward retired police dogs with subsidized veterinary care.

The Senate Criminal Justice Committee voted 9-0 on November 2 to approve SB 226 by Sen. Bobby Powell, D-West Palm Beach. A companion, HB 25 by Rep. Sam Killebrew, R-Winter Haven, has yet to receive a hearing.

Powell told the panel that retired law enforcement dogs often require a higher level of veterinary care than most aging pets.
