Be a Humble Lawyer
Jim Vickaryous
I nominated a friend for an award given to lawyers who are generous with their time. When given the prestigious award and publicly recognized for his generosity, he said to me, “I don’t know why I am getting this – I don’t deserve it.” I replied, “And that is why you are being recognized.” My friend has a humble way of being, helping all around him. It is so much a part of his way of being that he no longer recognizes his humility. It is just who he is.
In the legal profession, humility is not just a virtue but a necessity. While our training equips us to argue persuasively, analyze critically, and act decisively, true greatness as a lawyer emanates from the ability to remain humble. Being a humble lawyer means listening to others, showing kindness, understanding your role, and appreciating the broader purpose of the justice system. Let us explore what it truly means to practice humility in law.
