Volunteer attorneys are being sought to help former felons deal with unpaid court fines and fees that under a state law are preventing them from registering to vote.

After Florida voters in 2018 approved a constitutional amendment allowing most felons who had completed their sentences to vote, the Florida Legislature passed a law that said a sentence was not complete until the former inmate had paid court-ordered fines, fees, and restitution.

That prevented many, if not most of the state’s 700,000 former felons from registering.
