In a gripping legal battle that underscores the importance of safety in public spaces, a Palm Beach County resident has taken legal action against a local business following an unfortunate incident. On December 5, 2024, Mairim Zalez filed a complaint in the Circuit Court of the 15th Judicial Circuit in and for Palm Beach County, Florida, accusing Mathews Brewing Company LLC of negligence after she suffered injuries from a fall on their premises.

According to the complaint filed by Zalez, on December 14, 2023, she was visiting Mathews Brewing Company LLC as a business invitee when she tripped over what is described as a “hidden and concealed lip” at the entrance of the establishment. The lawsuit claims that this hazardous condition was created by Mathews Brewing Company LLC and alleges that they were aware or should have been aware of the danger it posed. Zalez argues that the company failed to maintain their premises in a safe condition and neglected to provide adequate warnings about potential hazards. “The lip on the door threshold was a tripping hazard and was nearly impossible to see unless a person was inspecting the floor,” states the complaint.

Zalez’s legal team further contends that Mathews Brewing Company LLC violated building codes by redirecting foot traffic away from safer entryways towards more dangerous areas. The plaintiff asserts that these actions were not only negligent but also foreseeable given their regular occurrence. As part of her allegations, Zalez accuses Mathews Brewing Company LLC of failing to train employees adequately in identifying and mitigating such risks.
