Pilot program suggested for death penalty conflict cases

A pilot program to allow one criminal conflict and civil regional counsel to take over conflict death penalty cases from a fellow CCCRC — instead of hiring private attorneys — will likely be considered again by the Legislature in its 2022 session.

A budget proposal from Ita Neymotin, the CCCRC for the Second District Court of Appeal jurisdiction, for the pilot was added to the Senate budget last year but failed to make it out of the conference committee with the House.
