As The Florida Bar marks its 75th year, we continue to look back at the decisions, programs, and good intentions that — sometimes in unexpected ways — helped shape the modern, integrated Bar.

In the summer of 1968, the war in Vietnam raged on, and dozens of Florida lawyers were serving in combat zones from Da Nang to the A Shau Valley. Meanwhile, back home, The Florida Bar was trying something new.

That year, the Bar partnered with a private travel company to offer members and their families a 14-day “Orient Adventure,” a first-class, charter-jet vacation to Tokyo and Hong Kong, complete with stays at the New Otani and the Mandarin, sightseeing, shopping, golfing, geisha greetings at the airport, and the promise of “absolutely no regimentation.” The trip, scheduled to depart from Miami and Jacksonville on June 18, cost $938, all-inclusive.
